Update 7/3: Made a few changes to organize the categories list and enhance the layout.
This is a purposefully simple view of new stories at The New York Times.
How do you find what's new at the NYT? This site is what I believe MyTimes should have been: a way to customize your view of the paper. This site does two simple things: it allows you to pick what sections (from RSS feeds) you want to see, and it tracks what's breaking (within last 2 hours) and what's new today.
Why? This is a supplementary, "quick" view of the NYT. Besides focusing on new stories, it lets you go deeper into the paper than the more laborious process of hunting through categories. Personally, I don't have the time and only regularly check a few sections daily. Now I can easily follow everything I'm interested in.
I've added "Top Stories" (from the Home Page) to the first page of article results. I admit it — I do enjoy the NYT editorial perspective; it's just not the "only" perspective. :)
Note to NYT (and other publishers): Because your feeds contain only summaries, including ads is silly (read: lame). Experiments like this should never erode reader trust, which all you're really selling, after all.
Enjoy, Tim (tim -at- smithmag.net)
